Why the Buck?
I have often been asked why I love the Buck and why I do not use the Wide or Outside Zone scheme; the answer is two-fold:
1- I love angles and I believe that God gave us angles for a reason. I further believe that we should use all the advantages we are given
in life – angles are a God-given advantage that the best defensive coordinator cannot take away from your offense.
2- If we try to Pin and Pull (P&P) with the Wide Zone and the defense has a better defensive end(DE) than we have an offensive tackle
(OT) or Tight End (TE) we are screwed.
As high school football coaches most of us can only play the kids that get dropped off for school every day. We cannot recruit a stud
OT or TE that can reach most DEs. What we can do is put a Wing Back (WB) or H-back (H) outside our OT or TE that has an angle on
that DE. I do not know about y’all, but going back to my playing days, I have found that down blocks are much easier to execute than
reach blocks.
It is a scientific fact that angles are superior to straight lines. I have applied that fact to football and proven it repeatedly with a
180-pound WB displacing a 240-pound DE with a well-placed and properly executed down block. I have also discovered that
horizontal movement can be as effective as vertical movement, and it is easier to achieve horizontal movement with smaller players.
We, as coaches, cannot guarantee that we are going to have a group of stud linemen every season, but we can guarantee that we
can teach an undersized player how to down block and to pull every season.
This is not a playbook, but a book of plays. I know no one team can run all these plays, but maybe you can find a few things that fit
into your offensive scheme. Thank you for choosing My Big Book of Bucks and I hope you find something you and your team can use.
